PhD Studentship in Nonlinear Equations in Quantum Chemistry at UK

University of Sussex

  • Applicants must hold, or expect to hold, a UK Bachelor degree in Mathematics at first or upper second class;

  • and/or a UK Master;

  • A high standard of written and spoken English is essential.

The University of Sussex is accpeting applications for a PhD Studentship in Nonlinear Equations in Quantum Chemistry,  with an application deadline due September 1, 2016. It offers a  tax-free bursary and waiver of UK/EU fees of £14057 per annum.

The research project addresses the mathematical analysis of nonlinear partial differential equations arising in electronic structure models of quantum chemistry and, in particular, models in the presence of an external magnetic field. The objective is to identity, explore and develop relevant links between the various variational methods, with a view to providing a more integrated approach to their use in nonlinear partial differential equations and initiating new areas of application within quantum chemistry, with possible use in numerical studies.

The PhD project will be under the supervision of Professor Michael Melgaard.

- Applicants must hold, or expect to hold, a UK Bachelor degree in Mathematics at first or upper second class, and/or a UK Master's degree in Mathematics, or equivalent non-UK qualifications. A high standard of written and spoken English is essential.

- Candidates with background knowledge of partial differential equations, mathematical analysis, and quantum physics, are preferred.

- The studentship is open to UK and EU resident students.

- Overseas (ex-EU) students may also apply, but applicants should note that the award waives the fees at UK/EU rates only, of £4068 per year. Due to UK government requirements, Overseas students pay higher fees of £14450 per year, so additional fees of £10382 per year will be required. We regret we are unable to fund the additional fees ourselves.

Application Procedure:

Apply through the Sussex on-line system.

State in the Funding section of the application form that the applicant is applying for the "PhD studentship on Nonlinear Equations in Quantum Chemistry supervised by Prof Michael Melgaard".

Applications should include a CV, as well as transcripts of marks obtained on the applicant's degree(s) and the names and contact details of two academic referees.

Overseas (ex-EU) students must state how they will fund the additional fees required, for 3.5 years. The university cannot consider applications from Overseas students without a clear plan stating how the additional funding will be raised.

Candidates are encouraged to apply, or at least make an expression of interest, as early as possible. The award will be filled as soon as a suitable candidate can be found.

The last possible date we can receive applications is 01 September 2016.

Possible start dates are 19 September 2016, 01 February 2017.
