Descripción

The Alexander von Humboldt Professorship, which is financed by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research through the International Research Fund for Germany, enables award winners to carry out long-term and ground-breaking research at universities and research institutions in Germany. The award funds, totalling €5 million for academics in experimental disciplines and €3.5 million for researchers in theoretical disciplines, are made available for a period of five years. The closing dates for submitting applications are 15 April and 15 October. The award funds are made available for a period of five years to finance the award winner’s research in Germany. Award winners may take up to 180,000 EUR p.a. from the award funds for their personal incomes. Other income, especially additional salary payments made by the receiving institution or from third parties, will not be set against this.

Academics from abroad are eligible to be nominated for this International Award for Research in Germany if they are at the forefront of their discipline and are expected to contribute to enhancing Germany’s sustained international competitiveness as a research location in consequence of the award.

Nomination entitlement

The award is granted on the recommendation of others. Nominations may be submitted by German universities; non-university research institutions may also submit nominations jointly with a German university. Nominations must be forwarded to the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation through the rector or president of the respective university or, where applicable, the academic director or head of the non-university research institution.

Nomination requirements

Nominations may be submitted on behalf of top-rank researchers of all disciplines working abroad who are eligible to be appointed to full professorships in Germany. Academics of German nationality are also eligible to be nominated provided that they have established their academic careers abroad. Close relatives (parents, brothers/sisters, children) and spouses/partners are not eligible for nomination. Academics working in Germany may not be nominated for this award.

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation particularly welcomes nominations on behalf of qualified female academics.

Selection procedure

The decisive criteria for selecting award winners are the nominee’s academic qualification and the persuasiveness of the concept outlining the nominee’s importance for and prospective involvement in the process of achieving the nominating institution’s strategic goals. On the one 2 hand it is thus assumed that the Alexander von Humboldt Professorship will contribute to the internationalisation of especially promising research areas in Germany; on the other, it is expected that synergies will be achieved in the focus and structure of the academic environment at the receiving institution. Even though the award winners will be at the centre of the sponsorship provided by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, they will also be the starting point for sustainable structural change both at the receiving universities and research institutions as well as in their environment. As such, they should act as a catalyst for the continuation of development at the receiving institution.

The nominating institution must therefore demonstrate how it intends to ensure that the award winner’s future academic work in his/her field of research will have a decisive impact, in particular on the following:

• honing the unique profile of the university/research institution by international standards

• taking the university/research institution into the top league worldwide

• achieving greater international visibility for the university/research institution

• sustainably promoting Germany as a location for research

Furthermore, nominators must explain how they intend to continue the award winner’s long-term affiliation to their institution, even after Humboldt Foundation sponsorship has come to an end (this should usually entail appointment to a W3 professorship or directorship).

Applications may be submitted both prior to appointment or advertising procedures and during ongoing appointment procedures.

Visit the website for detailed information on the selection procedure or contact the Humboldt

Foundation by telephone or email with further enquiries or case specific questions (c.f. Regulations on the Selection Procedure, p.2).

Complete applications must be sent to the

Alexander von Humboldt Foundation

Selection Department

Jean-Paul-Str. 12, 53173 Bonn, Germany

Up to ten award winners will be selected annually by an independent selection committee of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation which will usually meet five to six months after the closing date, i.e. in April and October. Selection will be based on an independent, peer review.

Use of award funds

The Humboldt Foundation particularly welcomes measures on the part of the nominating institution to promote equal opportunities for women academics.

Requirements

The nominee must be recognised as a world leader in his or her field.

- The nominee must be established as an academic abroad.

- Nomination by a research institution entitled to make nominations.

- Detailed statement on the nominee's academic qualifications and his/her compatibility with the nominating university’s strategic development by the institution in Germany making the nomination.

- The nominating institution's strategic development plan, e.g., with regard to enhancing its capacity to compete internationally in the nominee's subject area as well as the nominee’s role as a catalyst in bringing about structural change.

- Assurance that the position can be sustainably integrated in the structure of the research institution even after Alexander von Humboldt Foundation sponsorship has come to an end.

Selection procedure

Nominations may be sent to the following address at any time:

Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Selection Department,
Jean-Paul-Str. 12, 53173 Bonn, Germany

Reviewing the nominations takes five to six months. Therefore, nominations should be submitted well before the meeting of the Selection Committee targeted. The closing dates for submitting applications are 15 April and 15 October. There are two selection meetings annually.

It is the nominators’ responsibility to ensure that they have submitted all the necessary documents. Nominations not submitted as a single entity will take longer to process. Applications will be assessed by independent peer reviewers in Germany and abroad.

An independent Selection Committee composed of academics from all disciplines makes the final decision on the nominations received. The competition between nominations is international and there are no quotas for countries or disciplines. The Selection Committee makes its decision on the basis of the nominee’s excellence and the persuasiveness of the concept for his or her involvement in and importance for achieving the nominating institution’s strategic goals (see Regulations on the Selection Procedure).

Nominees will be notified about the Selection Committee's decision immediately after the meeting.
